Allen "Al" Tompkins Obituary

Allen "Al" K. Tompkins, age 86, of Ogallala, Nebraska, passed away, Friday, December 25, 2020 at the Ogallala Community Hospital in Ogallala.

Al was born July 21, 1934 to Ivan Keith and Mina Frances (Allen) Tompkins in Oberlin, Kansas. He attended school in Mead, Kansas, and graduated in 1952. He then attended college at Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas

During the summer of 1956, while working a summer job in Estes Park, Colorado, he met Shirley Hartman, who was also attending college and working a summer job in Estes Park. After meeting Shirley, he transferred to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Where Shirley was attending college) and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1957.

On April 1, 1957, Al was drafted into the Army. He was stationed at Eniwetok, in the Marshall Islands. While on furlough, he and Shirley were united in marriage on January 7, 1958, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Paxton, Nebraska.

After graduating from college, Al and Shirley made their first home in Garden Grove, California. They subsequently moved to Denver, Colorado, and finally to Ogallala, Nebraska, in 1963. Al went to work for Goodall Electric Company (later called TRW and American Shuzuki Corp.) until 1998 when he retired.

Al enjoyed many activities including going to Lake McConaughy, fishing, boating, pitch, cribbage, exercising, (especially weight lifting and playing basketball), traveling and spending time with his kids and grandkids. Al had a unique and ever present sense of humor, and enjoyed socializing with his many friends. He also always had a smile and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Al is survived by 1 son; Michael (Melanie) Tompkins, of Bend, Oregon; 2 daughters; Sherri Tompkins, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Tracy (Joel) Jorgensen, of Folsom, California; 1 sister; Janice (Larry) Ott, of Tucson, Arizona; 2 sister-in-laws; Maxine (Robert) Perlinger, of Paxton, Nebraska; DeEtta Hartman, of Lincoln, Nebraska; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, and his parents, Ivan and Mina.
