Wayne Fickes Obituary Wayne D. Fickes, 82, of North Platte NE, formerly of Ogallala passed away on August 4, 2020 at Great Plains Health, just hours from his 83rd birthday. He was born on August 5, 1937 to David and Helen (Meade) Fickes at Oshkosh, NE. Wayne had the distinction of having two high school diplomas; one from Garden County High School in Oshkosh NE, Class of 1955, and the other being from the Capital Page School in Washington, D.C. where he served as a page boy in the House of Representatives during his junior and senior years of high school.Wayne graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, NE with a pharmacy degree in 1959. Wayne was in the ROTC program at Creighton and began his five years in the United States Army after graduation. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1962 and was always proud to have served his country. On February 25, 1961 Wayne was united in marriage to Marlynn Kay Grant of Omaha NE. They were blessed with one daughter, Cynthia Lee. The couple began their married life in Monroe Michigan. Wayne and Marlynn moved to Scottsbluff NE where he began his lifelong pharmaceutical career. Moving to Ogallala in January 1963, he began working for Kersenbrock Drug, and eventually purchased the business. After closing the drug store, he worked for Safeway in Ogallala as their pharmacist for 4 years. Wayne believed in always serving his customers with care, kindness, concern and professionalism. Even after retirement, Wayne continued to be a relief pharmacist and was a consultant for many Western Ne nursing homes. Wayne and Marlynn moved to North Platte, NE in 2017. He was a charter member of the Ogallala Optimist Club, served as President of the Nebraska Pharmacists Association, was an Associate Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel #21 of Ogallala and was a 50 year member of the Oshkosh Lodge No. 286A.F. & A.M. Wayne and Marlynn enjoyed many cruises throughout the years that took them to many parts of the world. He loved his trips to the casinos, dining out, and watching NE Big Red. Wayne worked hard and always looked forward to enjoying his free time. Wayne is survived by Marlynn, his loving wife of 59 years; daughter Cindy (Mark) Marshall, Ogallala. Granddaughter Angie (Moises) Montalvo, Ogallala; 2 great granddaughters, Dilana and Adia Montalvo, Ogallala; sister Susan Arndt, Oshkosh. He was 'Uncle Bean Soup' to Michelle (Dan) Schmid, Oshkosh; Matthew Arndt (Brandi Jensen), Riverton UT; Samantha Schmid and Eli Schmid, Oshkosh. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; Marlynn's parents; and brother-in-law Corwin Arndt. Register Book signing will be Monday, August 10th from 9Am to 5PM at Draucker Funeral Home, Ogallala, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 11th, at the Draucker Funeral Home Chapel, at 10:00 AM, with Pastor Chuck Rager, of the United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation was chosen, burial will be at 2:00 pm (cdt) Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell NE. Military honors by the Keith County Veterans Honor Guard Team.
