Walter 'Bud' Sauer, 83, lifetime Ogallala resident, died Monday, March 7, 2016, in Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Bud was born March 2, 1933 in Brule, Nebraska, to Alfred and Opal (Jenkins) Sauer. He attended school in Roscoe. On February 17, 1957 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Joan Sandquist in Ovid, CO. Bud's first job was working for the Union Pacific Railroad. During the Korean War, he served in the US Navy in Japan, Korea, and China. Upon returning home, he worked various odd jobs until he became employed with the City of Ogallala Street Department, and then the State of Nebraska for a short stint. Ultimately, he returned to working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a foreman. He retired after 28 years but refused to stay idle. Instead, he dedicated his life to volunteer activities supporting the community of Ogallala, including Meals on Wheels and the Keith/Arthur County Food Bank where he also served on the Board. Bud was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ogallala. He didn't graduate from high school but one of his proudest achievements was earning his GED in 1995. He loved hunting and fishing and had a large collection of train memorabilia, and an even larger collection of hats. Bud especially enjoyed any event that involved being surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by their third child Tracie and a brother William and his parents.
