Robert McElhinney, 90, lifetime Arthur County resident, died Thursday, October 31, 2013 in the Ogallala Community Hospital. Robert was born June 2, 1923 on a ranch 7 1/2 miles northwest of Arthur, and made this his home all his life. He was the only child of Andrew K. and Rose (Dyhrmann) McElhinney. He attended Arthur County grade school and in 1942 graduated from high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. Robert returned to the family ranch. On August 5, 1966, he was united in marriage to Arlene (Farmer) Huber. Robert loved his family, friends, neighbors, ranching, the Sandhills, and especially Arthur County. He collected arrowheads, cast iron banks, and old tools and antiques of all kinds. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Robert was always interested in raising good cattle. His Hereford calves topped the sale in Arthur several times. Later on he became interested in the Red Poll breed and served as president of the Red Poll cattle club. He attended Arthur Baptist Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Draucker Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Monday, November 4th at 1:30 pm from the Arthur Baptist Church with the Rev Benjamin Keene officiating. Interment is in the Arthur Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Arthur Community Center.
