Paula L. Hughes

Paula L. Hughes, 65, longtime Brule resident, died Monday, March 2, 2015, in Hospice of the Valley at Surprise, Arizona. Paula was born July 15, 1949 in Ogallala, the daughter of Alva "Ab" and Pauline (Hunt) Shultz. Growing up, she enjoyed riding horses and was a member of 4-H. Paula attended school in Ogallala and graduated from Ogallala High School in 1967. She then attended business school in Denver, Colo. She returned to Ogallala and was employed at TRW and later as night auditor for the Holiday Inn. Early in 1974 Paula met Robert Hughes on a blind date with mutual friends. The couple was married on November 16, 1974 in Ogallala. They made their home in Brule. Paula volunteered with her kids' activities. The family enjoyed taking long trips each summer in their fifth wheel camper. In later years the couple continued their travels and spent the winter with friends in Arizona and Texas. In her early years Paula's hobbies included bowling and playing cards. She did custom cake baking for weddings and birthdays before starting employment at the Ogallala Pamida store in 1995. After being a sales associate she was promoted to an assistant manager. She retired in 2012. In her retirement she enjoyed making jewelry and other crafts. Her hobbies included gardening, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Preceding her in death were her parents. Survivors include her husband Robert "Bert" Hughes of Brule; her son Justin (Julie) Hughes of Ogallala; her daughter Jennifer (James) Jehorek of Lincoln; her sister Sue (Roy) Reutzel of Paxton; and five grandchildren: Josie, Jordan, & Jessa Hughes; and Alex & Addison Jehorek and other relatives. Visitation will be Friday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 4 to 6 p.m. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 7, at 10 a.m. in the Brule St. Johns Lutheran Church with Rev. Jon Dickmander officiating. Interment is in the Brule Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the family for cancer research.
