Nellie Rose Owen

Nellie Owen, 69, of Brule, died Thursday, August 20, 2015, in the Ogallala Community Hospital. Nellie Rose Shears was born July 13, 1946, in Thedford, the daughter of Vernon P. and Cornelia J. (Florea) Shears. She received her early education in Thedford and fifth grade through twelfth grade in Broken Bow. She was employed at B & D Factory and the Tumbleweed Cafe in Broken Bow, Cornhusker Ammunition in Grand Island, and West Company in Kearney. Nellie worked at TRW and ASC in Ogallala for more than twelve years. On October 30, 1967 Nellie was united in marriage to Duane L. Owen, Sr. The couple resided in Axtell. Later residencies included Broken Bow, Valentine, Barlett, North Platte, Cozad, Stapleton, Brady and also Texas. They later settled in Brule. She held several employments including babysitter, dishwasher, cleaning, and motel laundry service. Nellie also did farm work and drove a feed truck. Her hobbies included reading, doing puzzles, playing games,shopping, and watching old movies and soap operas on television. She especially enjoyed talking on the phone to friends and spending time with her grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband in 1999, her parents, son-in-law Andy Biel, and brother-in-law Ted Trotter. Survivors include her children: Duane, Jr. (Becky) Owen of Juniata, Tina (Bryan) Winter of Dix, Tonia (Dana) Hansen of Broadwater, Teresa (Dale) Pinkston of Hastings, Twila Biel of Ogallala, and Thelma (Brandon) Bullock of Brule. Two brothers: Claude Shears of Broken Bow and Jerry (Natalie) Shears of Alda. Three sisters: Marion (Jon) Holmes of Miller, LaVerna Trotter of Broken Bow, and Tammy Shears of Brighton, Colo. Also twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 5 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home.
