Meredith Adkins, 84, former Ogallala businessman, died Sunday, August 4, 2013, in Grace Pointe Assisted Living in Greeley, Colo. Meredith was born July 30, 1929 at Spencer, Nebr., the son of Ray and Mary (Shaw) Adkins. He received his early education in Madison. Upon graduation from Madison High School in 1947, he was employed by the Nebr. Game Commission. He was stranded in the Blizzard of '49 while stocking pheasants on the Mari Sandoz ranch near Gordon. During World War II Meredith worked at the U S Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. On June 18, 1950 he was united in marriage to Marilyn J. Oetting in Madison. The couple resided in Madison where they owned and operated the Coast to Coast Store. They moved to Ogallala in 1957 and they joined Meredith's parents as partners in the Coast to Coast hardware store. Later on, their son Jim became part of the family business. The Adkins' were with the franchise for nearly fifty years, retiring in 2000. Meredith and Marilyn moved to Greeley, Colo. in December 2012. He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church where he served on the Board of Education and the Building Committee for many years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and especially golfing with his family and many friends. Although he did not like to get his hands dirty, he was the "water boy" for Marilyn's beautiful flowers in recent years. Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include Marilyn Adkins, one son Jim and his wife Diane Adkins of Ogallala; two daughters: Marcia (Curtis) Sears of Greeley, Colo. and Janet (Russell) Johnson of Salt Lake City, Utah. One sister Karen (Mike) Welsh of Ogallala and one brother Dr. Nathan (Pamela) Adkins of Castle Rock, Colo. Also eight grandchildren: Melissa Elmblad, Kerri Adkins, Brett Adkins; Annie, Molly, and Emma Sears; and Taylor and Alex Johnson; and one great-granddaughter Raegan Elmblad. The visitation will be Wednesday, August 7, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be Thursday, August 8, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev. John Stubenrouch officiating. A memorial has been established to St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Interment is in the Ogallala Cemetery.
