Maria Jane Morava, born Maria J. Stroup, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the age of 68, in her home in Gering, Nebraska
Maria was born on August 9, 1957, in Sterling, Colorado, to Albert Claude Stroup and Ophelia Mae (Holliman) Stroup.
Maria spent much of her life caring for others. She began her healthcare career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), later worked as an X-ray technician, and eventually earned her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license. She dedicated many years to caring for residents in long-term care before retiring from nursing.
In addition to nursing, Maria had a talent for cake decorating and owned a cake decorating business for a time. She created wedding cakes, birthday cakes, graduation cakes, made mints, and other special treats that helped families celebrate life's special occasions.
After retiring, Maria enjoyed a quieter pace of life. She loved baking and cooking, sewing and crocheting, spending time with her family, keeping up with friends on Facebook, and playing online games with friends she had made across the pond. Her Christian faith remained an important part of her life. She believed in God, found comfort in her faith through life's challenges, and looked forward to the promise of eternal life. She enjoyed sharing laughter with those around her and found her greatest happiness in the time she spent with her family.
More than anything, Maria treasured her family. She especially loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother and cherished the time she spent with the people she loved most.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Claude Stroup and Ophelia Mae Asche; her stepfather, Kenneth Asche; and her brother, Neil Stroup.
She is survived by her children: Amber Dickinson of Ogallala; DeeDee Fetzer of Sterling, Colorado; Ryan Sullivan (Nora) of Lincoln; Robin Sullivan of Ogallala; and Kaden Morava of Scottsbluff; grandchildren: Steven, Samantha, Clara, Shaina, Courtney, Stacia, Christina, Noah, and Ryleigh; eighteen great-grandchildren; her siblings, Tracy (Lisa) Stroup of Lincoln and Kristi (Marty) Schirmer of Kearney; and her best friend of many years, Linda Pettipiece; along with other relatives and friends who will miss her.
Maria will be remembered for the care she gave to others throughout her nursing career, the beautiful cakes she created for countless celebrations, the homemade items she sewed and crocheted with love, the baked treats she lovingly shared, and the time she devoted to her family and friends. Though she will be deeply missed, her love, faith, and the memories she created will remain with those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family asks that you honor Maria's memory by extending kindness to others or supporting someone in need.
The family appreciates the prayers, love, and support they have received during this difficult time.
Private services will be held at a later date.
