Margaret "Meg" Reseggieu

Margaret "Meg" Ressegieu, 91, longtime Ogallala resident and formerly of Arthur and Alliance, died Sunday, February 23, 2014 in the Ogallala Community Hospital. Margaret Mary Meyers, a third generation Nebraskan, was born September 9, 1922 in Omaha, Nebr., the daughter of Edward P. ("E.P.") and Margaret M. (Gorman) Meyers. Meg grew up in Omaha but spent her summers in Arthur, Nebraska which she often referred to as "God's own cattle country." There she enjoyed one of her fondest memories riding horses and gathering cattle throughout the sandhills. She attended Barat College at Lake Forest, Illinois, during her freshman and sophomore years. Meg then attended Duchesne College and obtained her Bachelors Degree. At this time she was a countess at Ak-Sar-Ben representing Arthur County. In 1945 Meg was united in marriage to Edwin John "Jack" Ressegieu in Omaha. The couple made their home in Alliance and three children were born to this union. Together they built a ranching business in western Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming that drew praise from many. Following Jack's death in 1977 Meg moved to Ogallala and started the Meg Ressegieu Cattle Company. She was very proud to refer to her cattle as her "resort creatures." She loved her cows, putting salt and mineral out, and going to brandings. Meg was seen regularly on sale day in her special seat at the Ogallala Livestock Auction. Since she was a child Meg looked forward to attending the National Western Stock Show in Denver where the Ressegieus often showed and sold registered Herefords. Often seen in the local restaurants, she was known as the "lady with the book." Meg was an avid sports fan of her beloved Kansas Wild Cats, Denver Broncos, Dodgers, and her hometown Arthur Wolves. She often said "I love sports and I go with the season." Her hobbies included reading biographies, playing bridge, and singing in the choir. Meg had an unwavering faith in God. She was a devout member of St. Lukes Catholic Church and belonged to the Sacred Heart Society. Other memberships included National Cattlemen, the American Legion, Moose Chapter 122, and the Elks Club. One of her greatest attributes was her quiet, unseen generosity that she showed to so many people. Meg possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor. She was known for her ease in conversing with even total strangers. Throughout her life she maintained a genuine, humble and simple demeanor that won the hearts of many. Meg thrived on living a good and fulfilled life. Her signature gift of joy showed through her constant smiling, laughter, and eccentric personality and will always be remembered by her friends and family. Preceding her in death was her husband, her daughter Susan in 2013, her sister Esther Caldwell Meyers in 1995, two infant brothers, and a great-grandson Brady Larsen in 1995. Survivors include her children: Matt (Rachel) Ressegieu of Kansas City, KS and Therese (Steve) Dunn of Cottage Grove, OR. Grandchildren: Anna (Marty) Larsen of Arthur; Serapha (Leondro) Cruz of New York, NY; Juniper Hill of Stillwater, MN; Dustin Reed of Helena, MT; Jack (Zhen Zhen) Dunn of Bejing, China; Faith Dunn and Tasha (Leland) Doolittle and Shaina (Kris) Lyons, all of Cottage Grove, OR; Isaiah (Lacey) Dunn of Eugene, OR; Luke Ressegieu of North Platte, NE; and Erin Ressegieu of Kansas City, KS. and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, February 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Draucker Funeral Home. The Wake and Rosary Service will be Friday at 7 p.m. in St. Lukes Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 1, at 10 a.m. in St. Lukes Catholic Church with Rev. Bryan Ernest the Celebrant. Interment is at 1:30 p.m. in the Arthur Cemetery.
