John Valentine

July 25, 1946 — February 10, 2014

John H. Valentine, 67, longtime Arthur resident, died Monday, February 10, 2014, in Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo. John was born July 25, 1946 in Arthur, the son of Cecil and Wilma (Gessford) Valentine. He attended Arthur County schools and graduated from high school in 1964. He then attended a year of college at Kearney State. In 1965 John volunteered for the draft and was enlisted in the Army. Shortly after his enlistment he married Sheilah Fae Schick on January 11, 1966 at the Arthur Baptist Church. He served two years in the Army Signal Corps which included a tour to Vietnam. John and Sheilah returned to Arthur where he worked for Ted Frye Construction. John decided to follow his dream of photography and moved his family to Bismarck, No. Dak. where he started his own business Valentine's Studio. In 1980 they relocated to Arthur where he operated Valentine's Studio. In 1988 he sold the business but continued his work in photography. Since the summer of 1997 he was employed at Samuelson's bait shop at Lake McConaughy. Hobbies included fishing, card playing, story telling, and wood working. He especially liked going to auctions. Preceding him in death were his parents and sister Sharlene. Survivors include his wife Sheilah Valentine of Arthur, and his daughters: Lisa (Fred) Rookstool of North Platte; Miranda (Jared) Minshew of O'Fallon, IL.; and Julie Valentine (& finance' Scott Evans) of Indianola,NE. Three brothers: C.Harvey Valentine of North Platte, Walter (Linda) Valentine of Omaha, and Olin (Denise) Valentine of Centennial, Colo. Three sisters: Shirley (Doug) Garner of Trenton, Leona (Wayne) Godfrey of North Platte, and Marjorie (Gary) White of Lincoln. Four grandchildren: Shelby and Ryan Rookstool and Shantel (Jordan) Barta, all of North Platte; and Jada Minshew of O'Fallon, Ill. and two great-grandchildren: Naviah and Brylee Barta of North Platte and many nieces and nephews. The family chose cremation. The Memorial Service will be Saturday, February 15, at 2 p.m., in the Arthur Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Keene officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion. A memorial has been established to the Arthur Volunteer Fire Department.
