George McCreath Obituary James 'George' McCreath, 82, died unexpectedly from post-heart surgery complications on June 21, 2019 at Swedish Medical Hospital in Denver. He was born in Hartley, IA, on May 19, 1937, the son of James J. and Harriet (Williams) McCreath. George graduated from Primghar High School and the University of Iowa, majoring in Communications. Sherry and George met while he was in college and she was teaching school. After college, George and Sherry married June 14, 1959 and the following year he enlisted in the Army. George and Sherry then moved to Babenhausen, Germany, where he was stationed for two years. Their first son Jon was born there. After returning to the states, they lived in Fort Dodge, IA where they had their second son, Todd, followed by stops in Omaha and then North Platte where they had their third son, Scott, before settling in Ogallala. In August of 1969 they bought the Amoco station on I-80 and they ran it for over 24 years. They sold the station to Silco Oil at the end of 1993. He finished his work career in his early 70s at Valley Bank. George was an avid model railroader for the last 60 years. He loved to travel with his family, as well as visit historic train sights and traveled by train, whenever possible because of his love for the railroad. George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to have his family around him. George and Sherry celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary June 14, 2019. Through Georges life he was active in the following organizations: Optimist Club, Moose Lodge, Elk Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Big Mac Sports Club, Ogallala Baseball Association, and American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his two sisters, Dorothy and Martha McCreath. Surviving in addition to his cherished wife, Sherry (Metz) McCreath, are his sons, Jon (Allison) McCreath, Todd (Susan) McCreath, and Scott (Jutta) McCreath, his grandchildren Molly, Whitney and Ashley McCreath, and his sister Margaret Ringhofer and niece Barbara Crooks. Interment will be held 1:30 p.m. (CDT) Friday, June 28, 2019 at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Nebraska. Military Honors will be given by Keith County Veterans Association and The Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team.
