Esther Elizabeth Holscher

Esther E. Holscher, 94, longtime Ogallala resident, died Thursday, February 26, 2015, at Indian Hills Healthcare. Esther Elizabeth Holscher was born November 11, 1920 in Jansen, Nebraska, the daughter of Heinrich and Marie C. (Bier) Funkner. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She received her early education in Jansen. Following her fathers' death in 1930 the family relocated to Paxton, Nebraska to be closer to family. Esther graduated from Paxton High School in 1938 and then continued her education at Kearney State Teachers College. In 1941 she began her teaching career in Keith County at a rural school and later in Ogallala Public Schools. On January 23, 1959 Esther married Ernest Holscher and they made their home on the family farm southeast of Ogallala. She became a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies' Aid. She volunteered in other church activities including Vacation Bible School. In 1965 the Holschers adopted three children Renee, Jae, and Yvette. In 1983 Esther and Ernest moved into Ogallala. Esther moved to Wel-Life Assisted Living in 2007. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening and keeping her flowers beautiful. Esther also volunteered at Indian Hills Manor and as a Pink Lady at the Ogallala Community Hospital. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Ernest in 1994, daughter Renee Hawley in 1982, three grandchildren Kenneth, Tara, and Marie; and six brothers and sisters. Survivors include her children Kim (Dan) Dobson, Jae Holscher, and Yvette Unruh; and nephew Ron (Evelyn) Siffring. Grandchildren: Jackie (Shaun) Donohue, Bryan Krab, Martin Krab, and Joshua (Nicole) Holscher. Nine great-grandchildren: Kiana, Ethan, Sybil, Ashton, Jade, Emily, Lilly, Caylyn, and Tatum. Visitation will be Sunday, March 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be at St. Johns Lutheran Church, southeast of Ogallala, on Monday, March 2, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Robert Pierce officiating. Interment in the Ogallala Cemetery follows at 1 p.m. A memorial has been established in her name.
