Emma M. Melvin, 99, of Mullen, died Sunday, June 28, 2015 in the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen. Emma Margaret Melvin was born February 25, 1916 in Sutherland, Nebr., the daughter of Ira E. and Florence M. (VanMeter) Huffman. Emma received her elementary education at Arthur County District 8 and graduated from Nebraska School of Ag in Curtis in 1934. She then helped on the family ranch. On June 20, 1936 Emma married Dewayne Melvin in Alliance. The couple resided on the Ira Huffman Ranch near Lena, NE where Dewayne was employed for twenty five years. In May 1959 the couple moved to the William Musser Ranch near Tryon and continued to reside there. They moved to the Mullen nursing home in 2010. Emma was a member of the Helping Hand Club, the Cow Bells, and the Stock Growers. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Dewayne in 2012, daughter Carol L. Moran in 1992, son Wayne M. Melvin in 2006, son-in-law Woodrow Moran in 1996, and brother Marvin Huffman and his wife Loree. Survivors include one sister Henrietta (Ken) Blue of Ogallala, daughter-in-law Claudia Melvin of Arthur and brother-in-law George (Norma) Melvin of Bastrop, TX, nine grandchildren: Vernon Moran and Jackie (Rocky) Stewart, all of Sutherland, Tammy (Dick) Simonson of Mullen, Ron (Vickie) Moran of Smithville, MO, Vickie Moran of Scotland, SD, Elke (Glen) King of Enning, SD, Dru (Brittany) Melvin of Hebron, Ty Melvin of Sutherland, Meka Melvin of Arthur; Eleven great-grandchildren: Dan (Heather) Piersol, Corey (Sarah) Piersol, Brandon (Robin) Piersol, Nathan (Kasey) Simonson, Marci Simonson, Scott Moran, Brett Moran, Tina Wickre, Cashly King, Koyle King, and Jaxon Melvin 14 great-great-grandchildren. The graveside service will be Monday, July 6, at 11 a.m. in the Arthur Cemetery with the viewing preceding at 10 a.m. Tom Huffman will officiate.
