Eleanor McCroden, 95, longtime Ogallala resident, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, in the Ogallala Community Hospital. Eleanor was born August 27, 1919, near Valparaiso, Nebr., the daughter of Otto and Emma (Zavodny) Eberhardt. She attended country school in Seward County for five years. She moved with her family to a farm south of Brule in Perkins County. Eleanor completed elementary education through the eighth grade in country school and then graduated from Perkins County High School in 1938. On November 6, 1939 Eleanor married James McCroden in Cheyenne, Wyo. They farmed in Keith County for over fifty years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed farm life. She was a member of St. Lukes Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and the K & P Extension Club. Her hobbies included gardening, growing flowers, canning and baking, but most of all, her family was her joy. James and Eleanor celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1989. Preceding her in death was her husband in 1992, her three sisters: Norma Martens, Alice Hackbarth, and Berdeen Block, and her daughter-in-law Sandee McCroden. Survivors include two daughters: Kathleen "Kaye" (Dennis) McCormick of Ogallala and Patricia (Richard) Bird of Chadron; and three sons: Larry (Beth) McCroden of Big Springs and Charles McCroden and Steve (Dee) McCroden, all of Ogallala. One brother Darold ( Diane) Eberhardt of College Station, Tex. Also twelve grandchildren: Kevin McCormick of Denver, Scott (Pam) McCormick of Irvine, Cal., Stuart (Chelsey) McCroden of Ankeny, Iowa, Andrew McCroden of Ogallala, Mindee (John) Hilker of O'Neill, Melanee McCroden-Reimers and husband Cory of Ogallala, Stacey (Kent) Headley of Ogallala, Lori (Brad) Ehmke of Julesburg, Colo., Jill (Bill) Newkirk of Bridgeport, Kelly Bird of Loveland, Colo., Ryann Bird of Chicago, Ill., and Molly McCroden of Denver, Colo. and 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to the time of the Rosary & Wake Service at 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m. in St. Lukes Catholic Church with Father Bryan Ernest the Celebrant. Interment is in the Ogallala Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her memory.
