Donna Mae Shafer, 68, longtime Ogallala resident, died Thursday, October 16, 2014, at Indian Hills Healthcare Community. Donna Mae Shafer was born November 10, 1945 in Lewellen, Nebr., the daughter of Laville and Berniece ( Armstrong) Damon. She grew up on a farm north of Big Spring and graduated from Big Springs High School in 1963. On July 3, 1965 Donna was united in marriage to John William Shafer. The couple made their home in Roscoe where they raised their children. In 1987 Donna was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was no longer able to work. She moved to Indian Hills nursing facility in 1997. Donna worked at the Ogallala Medical Clinic as a nurse's aid and doctor's assistant and later moved into record keeping. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the PTL Club. Her hobbies included playing the piano and organ, gardening, camping, boating and crocheting. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband John Shafer, and great-grandson Jacob Schimek. Survivors include two sons: Dave (Donna) Shafer of Roscoe and Michael (Sandra Jean) Shafer of Aurora, Colo.; one daughter Cynthia Canann of North Platte. Two brothers: Ron (Geri) Damon of Loveland, Colo. and Michael (Kim) Damon of Grafton, Nebr. Two sisters: Beverly (Jim) Alberson of Maumelle, Ark. and Marcia (Larry) Zabel of Racine, Wis. Also nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday, October 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Monday, October 20, at 10 a.m. in St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev. John Stubenrouch officiating. Interment is in the Big Springs Cemetery. A memorial has been established to St. Paul's Lutheran School Endowment Fund.
