Alvin was born November 17, 1935 in Ogallala, Nebraska. He was baptized, confirmed, married, and will be inurned at St John’s Lutheran Church. He attended grade school at District #22 and graduated from Ogallala High School in 1953 then attended the University of Nebraska for 3 years. He returned to Ogallala and married Connie Frost, the valedictorian of his high school class and the prettiest girl at the prom. They started a family and a farm southeast of Ogallala. Alvin raised corn, wheat, alfalfa and had a cow-calf operation.
Alvin served in the Nebraska Army National Guard for 14 years, enlisting as a communications wireman, then attending Officer Candidate School at Camp Ashland, Nebraska where he was the Distinguished Graduate of the second Officer Candidate class and received a commission as a second lieutenant. He continued serving in the 2nd Battalion, 168th Field Artillery and completed his career commanding Battery A in Ogallala. He recently traveled on an honor flight to Washington DC which was a true highlight for him. Both of his sons served and learned of his notable career in the Nebraska Guard; on one occasion Ed, then a captain, was walking down Military Road in Lincoln when he met the Adjutant General, who would have been a few years junior to Alvin, walking the other direction. This was at least 25 years after Alvin had left the Guard. Ed saluted, “Good morning General”. The general returned the salute with “Good morning Alvin.”
Alvin was elected to the Twin Platte Natural Resources District board of directors and was Vice President and loan officer for Adams Bank (then Keith County Bank) in Ogallala.
In 1984 Alvin and Connie moved to Truth or Consequences. In addition to his banking career at Western Bank, employment with New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension, and Soccorro Soil and Water Conservation District, he served for many years on the Public Utilities Advisory Board of TorC, and as a veteran’s hospice volunteer for Amber Care. As a retirement job he served as a horticulturist for the Truth or Consequences Housing Authority for many years.
As a non-traditional student Alvin finished his Bachelor’s degree at New Mexico State University, majoring in Agricultural Economics.
All his life Alvin quietly assisted farmers and individuals when he saw a need. His family is still learning of those numerous acts of generosity.
Alvin was a member of the Rotary Club of Ogallala and then the Rotary Club of Truth or Consequences.NM for a total of over 50 years and was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. One of his passions was international service, especially student exchange. In honor of this commitment to the Ideals of Rotary memorials may be made to The Rotary Foundation.
