Allen "Al" Knott, age 101, longtime resident of Arthur, Nebr., died Thursday, March 5, 2015, in the Sutherland Care Center. Al was born September 27, 1913, at the family farm twelve miles northwest of Albion, Nebr. He was the third child of eight children. In 1936 he traveled from Albion to Grant, Nebr. In August of 1939, he married Dorothy Ott of the Grant area. To this union three children Karol, Doug, and Tim were born. Al and Dorothy worked for Walt Haythorn, ran a garage in Arthur, and then moved to the Storer ranch east of Arthur in 1951. In 1962 they moved to the Trego ranch, fifteen miles west of Tryon. Dorothy died in August of 1969. Al married Nellie Wheeler Walz in 1970. Al and Nellie moved from the Schick ranch to Arthur in 1973. He worked at the Arthur Ranch Supply from the mid 1970's until 2011, when the business closed. Al and Nellie liked to square dance and enjoyed their many friends and relatives. Their home was always open to visitors and overnight guests. Nellie passed away in 2005. Al loved to play cards, especially bridge and 500. A cribbage or pitch game was never passed up. He had a passion for gardening and many have enjoyed a free watermelon from his patch. Al was a member of the Arthur Baptist Church, Zion Lodge 234 of Hyannis, A and A Scottish Rite Freemasonry of Alliance, and the Ogallala Elks Lodge. Preceding him in death was a grandchild Shawn Cooney, step-grandchild Del Rae Walz, step grandchild Royce Slack, two sisters: Irene Bent and Mary Knott; and three brothers: Oliver, Lester, and Joe. Survivors include his children: Karol (Ed) Cooney of Arthur, Doug (Verdena) Knott of Sun City, Ariz., and Tim (Shelley) Knott of Arthur; seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-children: Louise (Johnie) Hendrix of Washburn, Missouri, Jerry (Judy) Walz of Cody, Marv (Theo) Walz of Arthur, eight step-grandchildren, twelve great-step-grandchildren, and three great-great-step-grandchildren. Also two sisters: Phylis Michel of Albion and Betty Miller of Omaha. And two sisters-in-law: Doris Knott of Albion and Marguerite Ott of Grant. The family chose cremation. The Memorial Service will be Thursday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m. in the Arthur Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Keene officiating. Memorials have been established to the Shriners Children's Hospital and the Arthur County Betterment Authority. Masonic Graveside Rites will be presented by the Zion Lodge 234 of Hyannis.
