Alan Brown, 87, longtime Ogallala resident, died Sunday, September 20, 2015, in the Ogallala Community Hospital. Alan was born April 2, 1928 in Elsie, the youngest son of Andrew J. and Gertrude O. (Witt) Brown. He attended grade school in Hayes County and graduated from Wauneta High School in 1945. After graduation, Alan worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the navy in 1948. He served in the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the China Service Medal. At the time of his discharge in 1952 he was a storekeeper Third Class. Alan then returned to the Hamlet area where he farmed and worked with his brother Ray at Browns Service Station. In 1955 he began working for Humphreys Auto Supply, stocking the back room and filling orders. A year later he took over the regional sales and delivery position from his brother Harold. Alan met Mabel Larine Savage in April of 1958 and the two were married on October 26. The couple resided in Ogallala and were blessed with four children: Lorrie Kay, Andy Bill, and twins Dyan Carol and Charles Ray. During their time in Ogallala Alan was active in the Church of Christ, teaching, preaching and serving as an elder for many years. He retired from Humphreys in 2005. After retirement he worked for Rodger Rankin helping fix lawn mowers and delivering. Alan was a hunter and fisherman and shared his love of the outdoors with his children. He enjoyed woodworking, working on small engines, and spending time with his family. Preceding him in death were his parents, daughters Lorrie Brown and Dyan Richardson, brothers Harold and Ray, sisters Margaret Greeley, Nelle Terry and Marlene Gardner. Survivors include his wife of 56 years Mabel Brown of Ogallala, two sons: Andy-Bill (Jan) Brown of Chappell and Chuck (Tammy) Brown of Morrison, CO; son-in-law Brett Richardson of San Ramon, CA; two sisters: Annabel Pump of Mesa, AZ, and Delpha Nordhausen of Wauneta. Special friends Tim and Judy Nowak of Ogallala. Ten grandchildren: Brant (Dustie) Brown, Kristi (Rich) Aubin, Nicole (Greg) Myers, Jennifer (Ben) Dailey, Tiffany Brown (Gregory Body), Heather (Alec) Robison, Shelby (Matt) Elliott, Shania Brown, Hank Richardson, Hannah Richardson and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. in the Ogallala Church of Christ, Minister George Robison will officiate. Interment is at 2 p.m. in the Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta, NE, with military honors by the US Navy Honors Team. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
