OBITUARY
Jean McColloch, 84, longtime Ogallala business owner, died Thursday, March 24,
2011 in the Regional Hospital Hospice House in Rapid City, So. Dakota.
Jean was born February 4, 1927 in Lemoyne, Nebraska, the daughter of Albert and
Ozeal Arnett Williams. She grew up and attended grade school in the Lewellen
area and then moved to the Ogallala area, graduating from Ogallala High School
in 1944.
She then attended and graduated from Blair Business College in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. She moved to the farm in Chappell and was employed at the Deuel County
Courthouse for twelve years, working as the Deputy County Clerk and in several
other offices including the County Attorneys office, the County Assessors
office, and the Selective Service Office. On November 30, 1946 she married
Gerald "Bud" McColloch in Ogallala.
In 1957 Jean and Bud moved to Alliance and they were engaged in farming and
ranching with her parents until 1965 when they moved to Childress, Texas. They
owned and operated a Best Western Motel and Restaurant.
In September of 1965, Bud and Jean bought the Phillips 66 Distributorship and
the Elms Motel and service station and the Valley Motel in Ogallala. In 1968
they started Hill Crest Mobile Homes and sold it in 1973. They purchased the
Pony Express 66 station on the I-80 Interchange at Ogallala.
In June of 1977, they opened and operated B & J's Hitching Post in Ogallala
along with her daughter and son-in-law until April of 2007. In 1979 they opened
and operated Taco Johns and also Lady Bee Fashions Clothing Store in Ogallala.
They also owned and operated B & J's 66 in Ogallala and Grant. Bud and Jean
purchased the Plaza Inn in Ogallala in 1989 and sold it in 1995.
For 42 years Jean worked with her husband operating B & J Petroleum as Phillips
66 and Amoco Distributors serving the farm and ranch communities in several
counties with bulk fuel and oil.
Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ogallala and since
1954 was a member of the Luceba Chapter #220 Order of the
Eastern Star of Chappell. Her hobbies included vegetable and flower gardening
and collecting recipes.
Preceding her in death were her parents.
Survivors include her husband Bud McColloch and her daughter Sandee and her
husband Charlie McCroden, all of Ogallala; and her son Scott McColloch and his
wife Jackie of Greybull, Wyo. A sister Maxine Case of Rapid City. Five
grandchildren: Mindee (John) Hilker of Oneill; Melanee (Cory) Reimers of
Ogallala; and Michelle (Dan) Burns, Angie (Casey) Cook, and Michael (Michelle)
McColloch, all of Greybull, Wyo. Also eleven great-grandchildren, several
nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Draucker
Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be Thursday, March 31, at 10:30 a.m. in First United
Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Rager officiating. The Eastern Star Rite will
be given by the Ogallala Chapter #142..
