OBITUARY
Mabel Statler, 77, longtime resident of Keystone, died January 29, 2011 in St.
Joseph's Hospital in Denver.

Mabel was born Oct. 4, 1933 in Arthur, the daughter of William Jennings Bryan
Sampson Melson Hill and Mabel C. Tockey. She attended elementary school in
Arthur District 32, and graduated as Valedictorian of Arthur High School in
1951. Mabel then attended pre-med classes at Hastings College.
Her employments included a position with the Keith County Treasurer, Addie
Racket and worked for McGinley Lane Law Office, and four years for Good All
Corrosion Control. Mabel met Bob Statler at the Ogallala skating rink on May 13,
1954. They became engaged on the same day in 1955. Mabel and Bob were united in
marriage on May 13, 1956 in the Arthur Baptist Church. The couple made their
home in Ogallala and later moved to Keystone.
The couple purchased a grocery store in Keystone from Howard Hays and they later
added on a car mechanic's garage. Statler's Grocery Store provided groceries and
supplies for the community for many years. Besides operating the Store, she also
served as the bookkeeper for the Keystone-Arthur Telephone Co. The grocery store
was later sold and became the office of Keystone-Arthur Telephone Co. and Mabel
continued working there until her death.
Mabel served on the Keystone School Board for thirty years and also belonged to
the Keystone Library Club and the Keystone Ladies Aid for many years. She
attended the Presbyterian Church of Keystone but was a Baptist at heart. Mabel
was a volunteer in the community and was the caretaker of the Little Church of
Keystone and gave tours. Her hobbies included reading, doing crossword puzzles,
and enjoying drives around the Lake to see the changing seasons.
Preceding her in death was her daughter Roberta Fenwick, grandson Zach Fenwick,
sister Martha Gies, and two brothers Charles Hill and William J.R. Hill.
Survivors include her husband Bob Statler of Keystone, her son Bill Statler and
his wife Cheryl, and one granddaughter Mariah Statler, all of Lemoyne, a sister
Lois Vath, and a sister-in-law Louise Hill, both of Keystone. Also numerous
nieces and nephews.
