OBITUARY
Lorrayne Garton, 93, longtime resident of Keith and Garden Counties, passed away
Tuesday, January 11, 2011 in the Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh.
Lorrayne, daughter of Anton and Sylvia (Brezina) Lanka, was born October 7, 1917
at St. Paul, Nebraska. After her mother's death in 1925, the family moved to
Broken Bow where Lorrayne attended school. After graduation from high school,
she attended and graduated from Nebraska State Teacher's College in Kearney.
Lorrayne's teaching career of nearly fifty years began in a rural school near
Nelson. She also taught in Arthur, Garden, and Keith Counties.
Lorrayne married J. Glenn Garton on April 15, 1946 in Carson City, Nevada. The
couple resided on the Garton Ranch in Arthur County until 1952 when they
relocated to a farm west of Lewellen. In 1965 the family moved to a ranch
northwest of Lake McConaughy. Lorrayne was a member of the Lewellen United
Methodist Church where she served in the United Methodist Women's group for many
years. She and Glenn were actively involved in the development of the Lewellen
Youth Center in the 1960s. Her hobbies included knitting, gardening, reading,
and playing bridge.
Preceding her in death was her husband Glenn Garton; grandson Hunter McDonnell;
sister Bess Kunkel; and brother Leonard Lanka.
Survivors include her daughter Susan and her husband Denny Peterson of Ogallala
and her son Tim Garton of Lewellen; grandchildren, Jason McDonnell of Ogallala
and Celie (McDonnell) and her husband Tim Vaughn of North Platte. Two
great-granddaughters: Shayda and Aliyah Vaughn of North Platte. Her brother
Wayne Lanka and his wife Marilyn of Sequim, Wash. Sister-in-law Angeline (Aufdengarten)
Lanka of Ranchester, Wyoming and also many nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen and there will be no viewing. A Memorial Service will be
Friday, January 14, at 10 a.m. in St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Ogallala with
Pastor Duane Dunwoody officiating and Rev. Chris Plantz assisting. Memorials may
be given to the Garden County Nursing Home or the Lewellen Public Library.
