OBITUARY
Joann Daubendiek, 76, longtime educator and resident of Ogallala, died January
20, 2010 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Joann Daubendiek was born December 6, 1933 in Julesburg, CO., the daughter of
Carl and Inez Steinke Daubendiek.
She attended District 7 in Perkins County
through eighth grade. Joann then received Normal Training while attending Big
Springs High School.
After graduating in 1951 she began teaching in the fall. She took one year off
from teaching to attend college and was able to obtain the remainder of her
college courses during the summers. Joann graduated from Kearney State College
in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She continued her education and
received a Master's Degree from Kearney State College in 1969. During her career
she taught at several schools including District 38 in Perkins County, District
61 in Keith County, Chappell Public School, and North Platte Public School. Miss
Daubendiek began teaching in Ogallala Public School in 1962 and retired in 1993
after devoting 40 years teaching at rural and town elementary schools.
Joann was baptized February 11, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church of Big Springs and
then was confirmed in her faith on April 25, 1948. She was a member of St.
Paul's Lutheran Church of Ogallala, serving on the School Board, the Finance
Board, and the Altar Guild. She also taught Sunday School for many years. In her
retirement from teaching school she volunteered in St. Paul's Lutheran School,
helping in the classrooms.
Her hobbies included reading, traveling, keeping family history, knitting, and
photography. Joann enjoyed going to Bible study groups and writing articles for
the Fencepost.
Preceding her in death were her parents and brother-in-law Jim Stivers.
Survivors include her sister Donna Stivers of Grant; her brother Richard and his
wife Patricia Daubendiek of Rochester, NY; three nieces: Sarah (Ian) Vabnick of
Buffalo, NY; Gretchen (Jeremy) Gorline of Cabot, AR; and Anne (Chris) Muskopf of
Boston,MA.; one nephew Nathan Daubendiek of Rochester, NY.; two step-nieces:
Terri (Dale) Godbey of Ogallala and Jody Snogren of Grant.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 24, from noon to 5 p.m. at Draucker Funeral
Home.
The funeral service will be Monday, January 25, at 10 a.m. in St. Pauls Lutheran
Church with Rev. Robert Pierce officiating.
Interment in the Ogallala Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls
Lutheran Church and the Dakota Boys Ranch of Minot, ND. Online Condolences may
