OBITUARY
Anne Marie Svoboda, 84, longtime Ogallala resident, died Saturday, July
31, 2010 at her home.
Visitation will be Monday, August 2, from 1 to the Time of Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
at Draucker Funeral Home.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. in St.
Lukes Catholic Church with Rev. Bryan Ernest the Celebrant.
Anne Marie Walsh Svoboda was born January 12, 1926, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her
parents were Dr. Louis Cyril Walsh and Anne Marie Campbell. She attended Our
Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, and
Duchesne College in Omaha. Anne also attended Teachers College, Columbia
University.
She married Frank Bernard Svoboda in 1950. They lived in Omaha while Frank
attended law school, then they built a house in Grant, Nebraska, and then moved
a year later to Ogallala, Nebraska in 1958. Anne bore ten children, two
pre-deceasing her.
Anne was Regional Director for the Nebraska Right to Life for a number of years,
helped establish PAKS for the disabled, was a member of the Goodall Library
Board, Association for American University Women, PEO, and the Legion of Mary.
As a member of the committee that chose the sculptures along Interstate 80, she
was interviewed on the Today Show about the controversial project. She also
taught art at St. Luke's School and in the Omaha elementary school system. Anne
helped found the Ogallala Regional Arts Council and the Ogallala Investment
Club. She served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in the
1980's.
A great traveler, she and Frank visited Egypt, China, Indonesia, Kenya,
Tanzania, and much of Europe. She designed her lake house with noted Chicago
architect John Buenz. She painted for a number of years and occasionally gave
lectures to local organizations about art. An avid bridge player, she and Frank
won the local bridge tournament two years ago. In 1975 she shared "Citizen of
the Year" award given by the Quad County ARC. Anne was a founding member of the
Great Books club in Ogallala. She lead a discussion group monthly on the
classics.
Preceding her in death were two children, John Svoboda and Paul J. Svoboda, one
grandchild, Simon D. Svoboda, four brothers, James Walsh, John Walsh, Gerald
Walsh and William Walsh.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Svoboda of Ogallala; her sister Mary Pat
Cornelius of Martinsburg, Iowa; her brother Thomas Walsh of Omaha; eight
children: Terese Svoboda and husband Steve Bull of New York City; Amy Svoboda
and husband Don Andrews of Lincoln; Katy (Stuart) Hunt of Silver Springs,
Maryland; Jane Svoboda of Lincoln; Patrick (Camille) Svoboda of Ogallala; Edward
Svoboda of Beatrice; Mary Svoboda and husband Brian Perkinson of Chicago,
Illinois; and Gerald Svoboda and wife Andrea Fiske of Portland, Oregon; and
eighteen grandchildren, Felix Bull of Greenport, N.Y., Frank Bull of New York
City, Georgia Andrews of Palo Alto, CA, Beck Andrews of West Lafayette, Indiana,
James Andrews of Lincoln; Seanna Hunt, Kit Hunt, and Jonathan Hollingsworth, all
of Silvers Springs, MD; Kama Svoboda of South Bend, IN; Sean Svoboda of
Claremont, CA; Seth Svoboda, Colin Svoboda, Mira Svoboda, and Enya Svoboda, all
of Ogallala; Ben Perkinson and Samara Perkinson of Chicago; Scarlett Svoboda and
Veronica Svoboda, both of Portland, OR.
A memorial has been established to the Ogallala Regional Arts Council. Online
