ean 'Cookie' Bassett, age 78, longtime Ogallala resident, died at his home March 31, 2009. 

Lewis Dean Bassett was born May 19, 1930 at Geneva, NE, the son of Fred and Marie Lewis Bassett. Dean received his early education in Geneva and completing high school in Ogallala, graduating in 1949.

Mr. Bassett entered the Army July 18, 1951. After completing basic training at Ft. Mead, MO he was stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He received an honorable discharge June 30, 1953.

On May 18, 1956 Dean was united in marriage to Norma Wilson in Ogallala.

The couple resided in Ogallala where Dean was employed by Leonards Dairy.

He later was employed by Garwoods Grocery and Union 76 until his retirement in 1989.

His hobbies included sports, camping, fishing, and working in his yard. He especially enjoyed going to activities where his grandchildren participated.

Dean became a member of the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Dept. in 1965 and served for more than 17 years and was recently inducted into the Fireman's Hall of Fame. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Other memberships included the Ogallala Elks Lodge and the VFW.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister Dorothy Hetherington.

Survivors include his wife Norma Bassett of Ogallala and

four sons: Jeff (Shelly) Bassett, Joe (Dixie) Bassett, and Jake (Tammy) Bassett, all of Ogallala; and J.D. (Lisa) Bassett of North Platte.

Two brothers: Donald (Shirley) Bassett and Darrell 'Buck' (Jacque) Bassett, all of Ogallala.

One sister Donna Farfan of Eugene, OR.

Twelve grandchildren: Ashley, Jeffrey, Josh, Jack, Jed, Jason, Jessie, Rachael, Sherry, Annie, Abbigayle and Andrea and two great-grandchildren. Also many nieces and nephews.

Cremation was chosen and there will be no visitation.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 4, at 10 a.m. in the Ogallala First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Miller officiating. Firefighters funeral honors provided by Ogallala Honor Guard. Military honors will be given by the Ogallala Veterans Organization. A memorial has been established in Dean's memory.
