 OBITUARY

 
Charles 'Chuck' Saunders, 59, longtime Ogallala businessman, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 in the Ogallala Community Hospital. 

Chuck was born June 12, 1949 in Gillette, WY, the son of Walter and Elizabeth 'Betty' Mathis Saunders.  Chuck attended elementary school in Wyoming.  In 1959 the family moved to Ogallala where Chuck graduated from high school in 1967. 

He then attended the University of Wyoming  in Laramie.  On August 12, 1969 Chuck entered the Air Force and was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver.  After being stationed in the Philippines at Clark Air Base he returned to Hamilton Air Base in California.  After being discharged in 1973 Chuck and Sally moved to Ogallala.  He began employment with Humphreys Auto Supply.  In 1986 Chuck became President of the family business. 

On July 11, 1970 Chuck married Sally Humphreys in the Ogallala Methodist Church. 

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees.  Chuck was active in the community serving as president of the Ogallala Chamber of Commerce from 1990 to 1998  and also is a Past President of the Ogallala High School Band Boosters. He was a past president of the Ogallala Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Society Member. 

Chuck enjoyed the Tuesday morning Bible Study group, the Cowboy Capital Consultants breakfast group, and golfing. 

Preceding him in death were his parents. 

Survivors include his wife Sally Saunders of Ogallala, his son Adam Saunders and his wife Ashley of Gilbert, AZ; and his daughter Amy and her husband Todd Schaefer of Colorado Springs, CO.  One brother Dr. Jerry Saunders and his wife Myrna of Laramie, WY; one sister Susan and her husband Doug Martin of Lincoln, NE.  Also three grandchildren:  Charlee Saunders, and Sutton & Sophie Schaefer and several nieces and nephews. 

Cremation was chosen and there will be no visitation.  Memorial Service will be Tuesday, May 12, at 11 a.m. in the Ogallala First United Methodist Church.  Revs. James Miller, Mark Baldwin, and Eric Wait will officiate.   Military honors will be given by the Keith County Veterans Organizations. 

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
