Virgil was born September 20, 1927 in Deshler, Nebr., the son of John and Cora Parpart Haessler. When Virgil was very young he moved with his family to Grant. In 1934 the family moved to Ogallala where Virgil attended school.

In 1946 Virgil was drafted into the Army. His duties as a military policeman included being part of the motorcycle patrol while he served in Japan. After being discharged on April 30, 1947 he returned to Ogallala. He was then employed as a mechanic at the Standard Station near Hokes Cafe. Virgil also worked for the Army Corps of Engineers during the construction of Kingsley Dam.

On April 7, 1952 Virgil married Marcia Stockamp in Alliance and the couple made their home in Ogallala. That year Virgil and his father built the Shamrock Station in Ogallala and operated the business. After selling the station to Miles Brunswig in 1962 Virgil went to work for Liggett Trucking as a diesel mechanic and truck driver. In 1969 he purchased his own truck and did over the road driving. He retired in 1972.

His hobbies included spending time at the Lake with his family, fishing and hunting. Virgil was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the VFW.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include his wife Marcia Haessler of Ogallala; four sons: Steve Haessler of Denver, Randall (Maria) Haessler of North Platte, Tim (Theresa) Haessler of Sidney, and Jerry Haessler of Ogallala. Two daughters: Debra (Darrell) Morrow of Lewellen and Judy (Charlie) Thompson of Alliance.
