Obituary
Garrett "Slick" Schlichtemeier, 19, of Ogallala and a student at Chadron State
College, died March 8, 2010 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama.
Garrett was born October 26, 1990 in North Platte, the son of Jeff and Shari
Hughes Schlichtemeier. He attended elementary
school in Ogallala. Football was his passion even at a young age and served as
the ball boy for the varsity high school team.
In 2009 Slick graduated from Ogallala High School where he played three sports
all four years. He was in the top five in the
graduating class of 92 students. He was a member of the National Honor Society
and the Spanish Honor Society.
During high school, through hard work, dedication and commitment, he lived the
athlete’s dream. He was presented the Dutch Cup Award and was chosen as one of
four KOLN/KGIN Nebraska State Scholar/Athletes of the year. He was a member of
the Nebraska State Activities Association Football and Basketball Academic
All-State teams. KOGA/KMCX honored him as the Outstanding Offensive Football
Player of the Year and was selected to participate in both the West Nebraska All
Star and the Nebraska Shrine Bowl football games. Slick set three school records
for football: 10 interceptions in a single season, 17 career interceptions, and
65 career receptions. He played on the Southwest Conference All-Conference 1st
team in basketball and golf. He also was the District B-4 champion in golf and
qualified for the state golf tournament in Lincoln. Additional awards included
the Travis Ford Memorial Biggest Heart Award, the Scott Wrage Memorial Mr.
Basketball Award, and the West Wind Golf Course Top Golfer of the Year Award.
Garrett received the Presidential Gold and the Cliff L. Johnson academic
scholarships to Chadron State College where he attained a 4.0 GPA the first
semester. He also received a football scholarship to play at Chadron State. One
of Garrett's mottos was always "Finish Strong". He modeled this belief each and
every day of his life and demonstrated this when he designated on his driver
license form to be an organ donor. His unselfish gift saved seven lives.
